Media players with coaxial output

Coaxial connector

— digital audio output; bandwidth allows even a multi-channel audio signal to be transmitted through a single connector.

Such an interface is intended mainly for connecting high-end audio equipment — for example, an external Hi-Fi class audio system or a home theater. The connector is usually an RCA jack. However, conventional RCA cables (like those used in the composite interface) are undesirable for coaxial connections; A special shielded wire is required for normal operation.

The optical output has similar capabilities (see the relevant paragraph); in fact, the coaxial and optical interfaces are two varieties of the same S/PDIF audio standard. At the same time, an electric cable, even a specialized one, does not give a full guarantee against interference — but it is not as fragile as an optical fibre.
