Mood colour blue
The WD Blue SN550 is the epitome of a new wave of affordable M.2 NVMe (M-key) SSDs. Compared to the previous WD Blue SN500, which worked on a narrowed x2 bus, the newcomer SN550 already operates with full-fledged four PCI-E lanes. There were three volume options: 250, 500 GB and 1 TB (the predecessor had only two smaller volumes). The rewriting resource of the older terabyte version is 600 TB, and the warranty period is 5 years.
Secret technologies
The WD Blue SN550 is based on the latest proprietary WD/Sandisk controller codenamed 20-82-01008-A1. Its specifications are still classified, but, most likely, it is something between 20-82-007010 from SN550 and the top three-core 20-82-007011 used in the WD Black SN750. The linear speeds of the WD Blue SN550, although not record-breaking, are still very worthy: 2400 MB / s for reading and up to 1950 MB / s for writing.
Layered layout
And even after the virtual SLC array is full, the sequential write speed remains quite high — about 900 MB / s, which is more than twice as high as even the top SATA SSDs, not to mention the low-cost ones. The WD/Sandisk semiconductor factories have achieved such a high memory cell density (96 layers) that even in the case of a maximum SSD capacity of 1 TB, flash memory is represented by a single chip.
Smart Savings
In order to reduce costs, the WD Blue SN550 lacks a separate RAM buffer chip (but a small buffer is still integrated directly into the controller) and a metal heatsink. Cooling, however, is not required for him — he is relatively cool even under prolonged load. In addition, the radiator would have to be dismantled if you wanted to install the drive in a laptop, monoblock or nettop. Simply put, every penny is invested in the speed of the SSD, and not an additional optional body kit.
People's Choice
A powerful controller paired with high-density memory allows the WD Blue SN550 to process the smallest files at speeds up to 410,000 IOPS. Previously, only much more expensive flagship SSDs could boast of similar results. But for many tasks and professions, such as programmers working with database management systems (DBMS), the IOPS indicator is much more important than the linear speed in megabytes per second.
