Digital
— input for connecting an audio signal from an external source in digital format. The use of such an input is generally similar to a linear one (see the relevant paragraph) — most often it is used to output an accompanying part to a synthesizer; the main difference is in the signal format. Digital transmission reduces the amount of noise and improves the overall sound quality compared to analogue, but somewhat complicates and increases the cost of instrument design. Also note that the digital input can use different types of connectors and cables. For example, even the most common S / P-DIF standard is presented in two signal transmission options — electrical, with a coaxial cable, and optical, with a fiber-based cable. The specific type of digital connector should be specified separately in each case.
