— in guitars with fan frets, the size of the sounding part of the string (scale) is not the same for all strings, but variable. In particular, a large scale is used for bass strings, and a small scale for treble strings. In this case, the frets are not placed perpendicular to the neck, but obliquely, resembling an open fan - hence the name.
