Active tone block

— a tone block is a set of circuits responsible for transmitting a signal from a pickup to a guitar's output; usually, the simplest signal processing (in particular, frequency control) is possible in this case. Active tone blocks are called with extended functionality, requiring additional power during operation — usually from a PP3 battery. Compared to simpler passive modules, such tone blocks provide a higher signal level (due to the presence of amplifying circuits), allow you to more accurately adjust the frequency ratio and filter noise better. The main disadvantages of such solutions are complexity, higher cost and the need for power. At the same time, we note that some active tone blocks can also work in a passive mode, without their own power supply; the functionality is noticeably narrowed, but the tool remains usable.
