Loops and slings

Loops/slings

— durable segments of webbing (often nylon or Dyneema), already sewn into a loop or made as a ready-made sling, that serve as a "quick constructor" for protection: they are used to extend points, connect station elements, create a wrap-around on a protrusion or tree, and sometimes as a short self-belay. It's important to note that the loop/sling has almost no stretch, meaning it is not a substitute for a dynamic rope and is not suitable for catching a fall on its own; however, it is convenient where compactness and predictable length are needed. Compared to a similar insert, Dyneema slings are usually lighter and thinner but are less resistant to heat and some knots, while nylon loops are a bit bulkier but more tolerant to friction and provide a bit of cushioning. Examples include setting up a station on two bolts, extending a point for a karabiner, creating a loop for a Prusik knot while descending, or for ascending fixed ropes.
