Graphite

— the most popular material for additional spools; the combination of aluminium main spool plus graphite spare spool is almost a classic of the genre. As for the material, graphite in this case is most often called an inexpensive variety of carbon fibre. This material is somewhat stronger than conventional plastic and more resistant to UV and some other influences; in addition, it is quite light, which reduces the weight and inertia of the drum. At the same time, the reliability of graphite is usually lower than that of metals, and besides, it is poorly compatible with braided lines — uneven friction wears out the spool and reduces the casting distance.

Note that there are several grades of graphite, and the specific characteristics of such a spool usually largely depend on the price category of the reel.
