Karambits

 

— the traditional karambit has a rather narrow and long blade with a pronounced point, shaped like a claw — bent down — and sharpened from the concave side. The handle is also often curved, so that the whole shape of the knife can resemble a sickle. There are some deviations from these rules, but a knife of this type still has a characteristic appearance. In addition, a ring at the end of the handle for the index finger is mandatory for karambit (the knife was originally designed for a reverse grip); in some models there is also a second ring, under the little finger. As for the purpose, initially knives of this type were intended for rather specific tasks, such as collecting coconuts, and in our latitudes they are poorly suited for domestic use. However, there are still everyday situations where karambit can be at its best — in particular, cutting ropes, ripping fabrics and opening various packages.
