In general, rear discharge is the most popular option these days, but this is only useful if the grass is bagged. Without a bag, the mowed vegetation thrown backwards flies to the feet of the user following the mower. Therefore, if the cut grass needs to be left on the lawn (for example, for mulching), it is more convenient to use a side discharge.
