The image intensifier tube itself is a vacuum tube, on one side of which there is a photocathode, and on the other, a screen covered with a luminous substance (phosphor). When light hits, the photocathode emits electrons, which are accelerated by special devices and, hitting the screen, create a picture visible to the operator. To date, there are several generations of image intensifier tubes, with their own characteristics, but they all have common features — in particular, they combine simplicity and relatively low cost with high sensitivity. On the other hand, this sensitivity can lead to the appearance of artifacts in the image, and daylight can generally disable the image intensifier tube, which requires caution when handling such devices.
