Such a setup is very convenient in terms of camera control: it allows you to quickly change angles and provides features that are not available when mounted on a head/helmet or torso. For example, you can alternate the first-person view with shooting a video selfie, “sneaking” with the camera into cramped places where your head would not fit, etc. On the other hand, extra weight on the arm can be uncomfortable, and during long shooting, it can also be quite tiring; in addition, there is an increased risk of hitting a hard object with the camera if you move your hand carelessly. Thus, one of the most popular uses for hand mounts is scuba diving: underwater, most of the weight “disappears”, and the likelihood of hitting the camera is minimal.
