The evolution of SSD drives with PCI-E 4.0 interface
The first PCI-E 4.0 SSDs were expensive and had problems with buffer/cache filling. However, over the past few years, SSD drives have made significant leaps in evolution thanks to Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology, which uses RAM for cache.
Management controller with Host Memory Buffer support
WD Black SN770 uses a custom 4-channel HMB controller from WD, which increases the stability and performance of the model. Throughput is 5150 MB/s when reading and 4850 MB/s when writing. The transition to a new platform also reduced power consumption and controller heating, which is important for owners of gaming laptops.
A drive that's hard to compete with
In gaming tests, the SN770 showed high performance, which allows us to recommend it for gaming PCs and mid-range workstations. Competitors like the Samsung 970 Evo and Crucial P5 offer similar performance, but the WD Black SN770 wins on value for money. Samsung drives are better at complex workloads, while Crucial products offer better value per gigabyte of data.
