About a year ago, WD updated its line of Blue drives, beginning to use new memory with a vertical cell arrangement called 3D NAND. The WD Blue 3D NAND is a solid mid-range option in this updated lineup.
Support for Vital Technologies
The drive controller is a four-channel Marvell 88SS1074 chip. It supports the standard set of technologies for SSDs (NCQ, S.M.A.R.T., DEVSLP, and TRIM), which allow the SATA interface power to be automatically disabled to save battery life, automatically free unused blocks in flash memory, and monitor the disk's status in the background. All of this optimizes the device's performance, increasing its speed and longevity.
Speed Over 500 MB/s
The performance of the WD Blue 3D NAND is good, but somewhat ambiguous. On one hand, it achieves over 500 MB/s for sequential read and write in synthetic tests. Moreover, unlike drives with SLC caching, it maintains speed with large files. On the other hand, the speed of the WD Blue 3D NAND significantly drops during stress tests.
