Whistling kettles

Whistling kettles

— the presence of a whistle in the design of the kettle (see "Type"); For brewers, this function is not relevant.

The whistle itself is built into the lid that covers the spout of the kettle during heating on a fire or electric burner. It has the appearance of a hole, when passing through which the steam emits a whistle or other characteristic sound (for example, there are whistles that are similar in timbre to harmonicas). In this case, the holes are designed in such a way that the sound occurs only at high steam pressure, when the kettle is already boiling. The purpose of this function is obvious: it signals the end of heating and reduces the risk of forgetting the kettle left on the stove.

Note that the lid itself can take the form of a removable cap — or be made hinged and fixed directly on the kettle. The second option is generally more convenient: the whistle is not lost, does not fly off from a strong steam pressure (this can happen with a carelessly put on cap), and the design usually provides for certain devices that allow you to open the lid without touching its main part (which is very hot from the steam in the kettle).
