In these models, the drive slot is hidden under the front panel, and you need to open it to access this slot. This makes better use of front panel space by eliminating the need for a drive slot, leaving more room for the screen and controls. And the need to flip the panel every time to insert / eject a disk usually does not create any particular inconvenience.
