The 8. 5 Dry Climbing Rope is Black Diamond's versatile twin or half rope designed for winter mountaineering and summer alpine climbing. It's the thickest twin or half rope that Black Diamond offers, and its dry treatment protects the core and sheath from water absorption for use on ice or rock. Unique to BD ropes, the 2x2 woven sheath balances both durability and great handling; it isn't too stiff that it struggles through belay devices or so soft that it won't last a single season.

The 9. 4 Climbing Rope is Black Diamond's skinniest line that's certified solely for for single use. It's a balance between lightness and durability that advanced climbers look for whether they're projecting sport or trad. Its 9. 4mm diameter is at once supple and strong to slide through carabiners without much rope drag and still take a surprising amount of falls. Since it sits on the skinnier side, this rope is a great option for the occasional alpine approach as long as the rocks are dry.

The Mambo Standard Climbing Rope is our beefy tether of choice when taking our newer climbers to the crag. The wide diameter gives more control in belay devices, and the thick sheath provides increased durability for multiple top-rope sessions. Petzl's EverFlex treatment stabilizes the core strands, so we can depend on consistent grip and smooth handling as we dance up the wall, from first send to last.

Mammut's Alpine Sender Dry Rope is a triple-certified climbing rope that you can use as a half rope in the alpine, a twin rope on a multi-pitch, or a single rope on challenging single-pitches. Best-used by experienced belayers, its skinny 8. 7mm diameter packs small and reduces rope drag on wandering routes. Mammut's Dry treatment excels UIAA's standards for limiting water absorption, and it significantly enhances abrasion-resistance for a greater performance on rock as well as ice. Mammut also added a center mark to assist with quicker rappels.

Now that we have the Metolius Roll Up Stick Clip Kit, gone are the days of the painter's pole walking stick that gets caught on low-hanging branches and telescoping poles that don't quite fit in our pack or take on dents that make us fight for extension. This innovative design looks like and takes up just as much space as a roll of duct tape to conveniently dump inside our pack for the approach. Once at the wall, we twist the end piece on the rivet, thread on the Superclip, and start to unroll the pole, which gives us up to 9. 8 feet of length to easily clip the first bolt.

Camp USA's XLC Nanotech Crampon is a lightweight, aluminum crampon that weight-conscious ski mountaineers look for, but steel front points lend an edge when you encounter icy or even rocky objectives. Aluminum points get shredded if you ever try to climb ice or rock, so Camp USA made the front points out of Sandvik Nanoflex stainless steel to solve that issue. Camp's innovative 3D shaped construction (pressed, not bent) makes the aluminum frame sturdier than standard aluminum frames. It's compatible with most semi-rigid mountaineering boots.

There's at least one cam in this Wild Country New Friend Set that would fit in a crack that suits our fingers perfectly. One might feel too small, and the other too large—or some other combination—but at least one will slide into a crack as perfectly as all four fingers.
