Another difference is that the actual control capabilities provided by the external module are quite modest and rarely include any adjustments other than volume. However, even this feature can be very useful — in particular, during games, when changing the settings programmatically is very inconvenient, if not impossible at all. Actually, most audio cards with this feature are specifically for gaming models. Also, in some cases, peripheral devices can be connected to the external module — speakers, headphones, sometimes even microphones; this is more convenient than using the audio card's own connector.
