Dark night
The WD Black SN850 is a PCI-E 4.0 SSD in-house designed and manufactured by Western Digital, which acquired SanDisk a few years earlier. It replaced the SN750, the top among PCI-E 3.0 drives. Sold as a version without a radiator, and with a luminous cooler EKWB.
Triple Strike
At the heart of the SN850 is a proprietary Black G2 controller with three ARM cores, which provides the best among PCI-E 4.0 SSDs with up to 1 million IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second). The external DDR4 buffer chip speeds up the processing of small files even more.
brotherly bonds
The flash memory chips are represented by 96-layer 3D TLC BiCS4, but not by Kioxia, but by WD's own. The fact is that these two companies work closely in the design of multilayer flash memory, but they are directly involved in conveyor production separately — each in its own factory.
Work and leisure
The presence of its own production lines allows WD to manually select the most successful flash memory chips from the entire batch and, thereby, provide the Black SN850 with a high linear read speed of 7000 MB / s and a linear write of 5100 MB / s. After continuously writing 10 percent of the disk capacity, the speed drops to about 1500 MB / s and the disk needs time to rest.
