The WD Black SN7100 represents an upgrade in Western Digital's signature line of NVMe drives, combining high speed, proprietary hardware architecture, and energy-efficient design. The model is positioned as an enhanced alternative to the popular SN770 drive, boasting higher speed performance and more advanced flash memory. It features a modern PCI-E 4.0 interface for data exchange, with peak speeds of up to 7250 MB/s for reading and 6900 MB/s for writing.
Unlike many competitors, the SN7100 is equipped with Western Digital's own controller — the WD A101-000172-A1, with improved energy efficiency. The storage foundation is a 218-layer flash memory from Kioxia, with a compact and reliable module arrangement. With a specified endurance of 600 TBW and a mean time to failure of 1.77 million hours, the drive is targeted not only at consumer but also semi-professional scenarios, including handling large multimedia projects, gaming sessions, and intensive multitasking.
Its performance in random operations is also impressive: up to 1.4 million IOPS for writing and up to 1 million IOPS for reading, which favorably distinguishes the SN7100 from most QLC memory solutions. These features allow it to be used in systems where fast handling of small files is crucial — for instance, when launching games with lots of textures or processing caches in work applications. Instead of a massive heatsink, the drive uses a thin graphene thermal interface, suitable for compact builds, laptops, and ultrabooks. The official warranty from the manufacturer is 5 years.
