The sixth generation of a premium compact large inch sensor that is a role model for other players in the photographic arena. Together with the VI prefix in the name, the camera has acquired longer focal length optics — the coverage of the focal length range of the model has grown from 24-70 mm to 24-200 mm (full frame equivalent). The lens aperture was sacrificed for the ability to “photohunt” at long-range distances, the indicators of which now “float” from f / 2.8 at the short end to f / 4.5 at the telephoto zoom position (in the predecessor model, the maximum aperture of the standard optics was equal to f / 1.8-2.8 ). Using 315 phase-detection AF points, the Sony RX100 VI locks onto the target in a record-breaking 0.03 second. Also stunningly fast "baby" is in burst mode (24 fps). The...compact camera shoots video in 4K format with an extended dynamic range (Hybrid Log Gamma mode). The optical stabilization system, the effectiveness of which is estimated by the ability to compensate up to 4 stops of exposure, kindly provides its assistance in obtaining a smooth video sequence and photos without blurring. As before, the hallmark of the camera is a retractable OLED viewfinder.

Video reviews

The RX100 series cameras from Sony are rightfully considered the leaders of the guard of functional compacts. They demonstrate excellent quality of photo and video shooting, take up a minimum of space in the photographer's ammunition, and are suitable for use in the most diverse roles.

Solid increase

The key innovation in the sixth version of the Sony RX100 is a solid increase in zoom ratio. Instead of a 24-70 mm lens, the camera now uses built-in optics covering equivalent focal lengths of 24-200 mm, which greatly expands the range of tasks to be solved. However for this we had to sacrifice aperture ratios — the maximum aperture grows from f / 2.8 at the short end to f / 4.5 at the telephoto zoom position.

Optical stabilization

Optical image stabilization is designed to compensate for a possible lack of aperture ratio with a claimed efficiency of about four stops of exposure or shutter speed. It also contributes to the smoothness of the video sequence when recording videos. By the way, video shooting on the camera is carried out in FullHD and 4K resolution, including with extended dynamic range Hybrid Log Gamma and S-Log2, S-Log3 profiles. Video recording is limited to a few minutes to prevent overheating of the sensor.

Solid pluses

The camera shoots a photo at a record speed of 24 fps, instantly focuses (0.03 sec according to the "passport" characteristics), effectively tracks the target by the eyes in the tracking autofocus mode. In addition, the model has acquired a tilting screen with touch controls and a retractable OLED viewfinder. A small bitter pill is a modest battery life (240 shots according to CIPA standards). However, the spare battery NP-BX1 successfully solves this oversight.
