Old sign, new headphones

In 2019, Huawei released the FreeBuds 3 headphones, which most of the specialized smartphone and headphone review publications called one of the best True Wireless models of the year. A year later, the company presented an updated version of its hit. We say right away, let the name “3i” not mislead you, the novelty differs markedly from its predecessor both externally and internally.

High-quality and stable connection without breaks and delays

They started with the form factor. The old FreeBuds were earbuds, the new ones became vacuum. The speakers have also been completely redesigned, which have been reduced in size and now sound completely different. The charging case has slightly increased in size and has become more taut. The headphones themselves, thanks to their compact size, look neat, but do not really stand out against the background of dozens of similar models. At the same time, some functions were finalized for everyone, but something, on the contrary, was cut. Wireless charging and the flagship Kirin A1 processor went under the knife, so instead of Bluetooth 5.1, the usual fifth version is used with support for protocols (A2DP, HFP and AVRCP), as well as basic AAC and SBC codecs. However, this did not affect the performance in any way, the headphones instantly catch the connection, very rarely lose it and provide minimal delays in sound transmission. But the case has finally received splash protection (class IPX4) and now you can go to the gym with them. Battery life remained almost at the same level: 3 hours with noise reduction, 3.5 hours without it.

Active noise cancellation

Active noise cancellation works just as well. Three active microphones are very effective at damping external sounds, and the anti-phase effect they create does not put pressure on the ears. Sony's FreeBuds 3i are a little short of the reference noise cancellers, listening to jazz by throwing stones into the crusher will not work in them, but for their $110 noise canceling is very good. But this is not why we would buy FreeBuds 3i. And for the sound. Thanks to vacuum nozzles, the sound received the necessary volume and density, the sound stage expanded and the bass development was significantly improved. The lows here are really felt, sometimes even in excess, which you do not expect from headphones of this type. You can adjust the sound to your taste with an equalizer in a proprietary application. It greatly expands the capabilities of the headphones (updating the firmware, changing the control of the touch buttons, etc.), but at the end of September it is only available for Android. Along with the easily soiled body of the headphones themselves and the case, this is almost the only drawback of the FreeBuds 3i.
