The general principle of this design is that the reservoir is equipped with double walls, with either a vacuum or a layer of special insulating material between them. This minimizes heat or cold loss, keeping the contents warm for a long time and reducing unnecessary energy consumption for reheating. Note that the specific type of reservoir where additional insulation is applied depends on the coffee maker type (see above): in drip models, it is the carafe for brewed coffee; in espresso machines, it is the milk container.
