Such products are similar to lipsticks in terms of the method of application, however, they are used not only as a make-up product, but also to moisturize the lips, protect them from various adverse effects (for example, cold winter air), as well as heal wounds and irritations. Another difference from lipstick is that the balm is usually made on the basis of wax, has a less pronounced colour (and often is completely colourless) and can be produced with various flavors, such as fruit.
In addition, balms include various protective and restorative products for other parts of the body — for example, for the legs or the skin around the eyes, and sometimes for the body "as a whole" (see "Application"). They often have the consistency of a cream and are even called balm creams, and are placed in a separate category due to specialization.
All balms are applied "indefinitely" — in other words, they must be absorbed into the skin; there is no need to rinse off.
