Nickel-plated strings
— steel coated with a thin layer of nickel is used in strings for electric guitars and bass guitars. The braid can be of the same material or pure steel or nickel. The additional coating somewhat softens the sound coloration characteristic of pure steel, but such strings still sound noticeably louder and brighter than nickel strings. In addition, for a number of reasons, nickel strings are rare, and coated steel is more often used.
