— initially, the rule is not a measuring tool, but a finishing one: it is a long (metre or more) rail designed to smooth and level plaster on walls, concrete floors, etc. However, some rules can be supplemented with spirit capsules and used as improvised levels as well; however, such capabilities are not mandatory.
