— the purpose of wood sealant is to create a waterproof and airtight yet flexible joint that will endure the "breathing" of wood and maintain a gap-free finish. Wood absorbs and releases moisture, so adhesion to paint coatings, the possibility of subsequent painting, and resistance to sunlight and biological damage are essential. Acrylics are convenient for painting indoors, while neutral silicones and MS polymers are suited for bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor use. Compared to universal sealants, specialized compositions for wood better handle micro-deformations and are less prone to peeling from the fibers; on the contrary, putties are designed for a sandable "rigid" patch. Common applications include window frames and panels, corner joints of moldings and solid baseboards, gaps in planking, timber framing, and stairways.
