Unique compactness
Unlike most manufacturers, Shanling has gone from the usual brick form factor, and created a very compact (45x40x14 mm) and lightweight device (38 g) made of aluminium, moreover, in a wide choice of colours — red, black, blue, silver , Violet.
Features of control and connection
Small size — small display. It is coloured here and occupies almost the entire area of the front panel. The control is touch-sensitive, and due to the miniature size it is implemented using swipes. You get used to it quickly, but the lack of Russian in the menu can be a problem. Not without an analogue controller — a wheel on the right side, with which you can adjust the volume, "walk" through the menu, turn on / off the screen and the player itself.
Shanling M0 received a slot for microSD up to 512 GB and a Bluetooth 4.1 module. with support for AptX, LDAC codecs for working with wireless headphones, but there is also a traditional miniJack for wired up to 32 Ohm. I was pleased with the USB Type C connector, which is used not only for charging, but also for working in DAC mode. The player can be connected to a computer, smartphone, and get better sound.
battery life
Despite the manufacturer's claims of battery life of up to 15 hours in playback mode, in fact, we were able to squeeze less than 12 hours out of the M0 at 75% volume. Nevertheless, given the miniature size, the result is still excellent, and 15 hours of battery life can certainly be achieved at a volume of 40 – 50%, but such listening is unlikely to be comfortable.
Sound
The player supports almost all popular audio formats, including Hi-Res, as well as Cue files. Moreover, the latter reads quite correctly. The ESS Saber ES9218P DAC with a sample rate of 384 kHz and a bit depth of 32 bits is responsible for the purity and richness of the sound.
In general, given the price and size, the sound is decent, although it does not reach the older Shanling models. The detail is good, but the mids are blurry and the stage isn't wide enough to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the whole composition. However, an inexperienced user will definitely like the sound. Especially for such money.
Shanling M0 captivates with convenience, compactness and price. This is an perfect contender for exploring the world of Hi-Fi sound, but falls short of the title of an audiophile device.
