Amethyst

— one of the varieties of quartz, which received its own name. Transparent amethysts are considered the most valuable, they belong to semi-precious stones; it is these inserts that are most often found in jewelry.

The main difference between amethyst and other types of quartz is the colour — blue, pinkish or purple. Also, this mineral is to some extent prone to pleochroism — a change in colour with a change in the angle of view or type of lighting. However, these phenomena are rather weakly expressed.

This category may also include artificial amethysts — usually these are cubic zirconias (see the relevant paragraph), which have a characteristic colour, due to which they are distinguished into a separate category.
