Sapphire

— a precious stone that originally had a rather high cost — even now, natural sapphire is classified in the same category as diamond. According to the chemical composition, it is a kind of corundum, similar to ruby. Actually, these two types of minerals are separated solely by colour: lilac-red corundums are classified as rubies, and all other colours are classified as sapphires. The classic colour of this mineral is blue; colourless stones (leucosapphires) are also often found.

It should be noted that modern technologies make it possible to produce sapphires artificially, and in very solid volumes. Synthetic (hydrothermal) sapphires look no worse than natural ones, but are much cheaper (for natural stones, a significant part of the cost is associated precisely with the origin).
