— initially, topaz was highly valued, but nowadays this stone is usually classified as semi-precious (although by the standards of this category it can be very expensive). Topazes vary in colour, but gold-pink, yellow, and blue topazes are the most popular in jewelry. Some varieties of this stone have their own names — for example, the most valuable varieties of blue topaz are called “London topaz”, usually these are stones of a deep blue colour. Also, this category may include "mystic topaz" — a stone of artificial origin, which stands out for its unusual appearance (with overflows of all colours of the rainbow).

Separately, we note that you should not confuse topaz with rauchtopaz (see the relevant paragraph) — these are two completely different stones.
