RAID support

— the support for RAID arrays is built directly into the drive case itself.

Models with this feature, by definition, have several slots for drives. It is worth noting that when using internal drive cases (see “Type”), it is more convenient to create arrays using the PC or server itself; so RAID support is found exclusively in external devices and docking stations.

Typically, the meaning of an array is not simply to combine the volumes of all drives, but also to increase the speed of access to data and/or improve the reliability of their storage. The specifics depend on the RAID level: for example, RAID 0 with “scattering” data blocks across separate disks increases access speed, RAID 1 with information mirroring allows you to save all data even if one drive fails, etc. There is also a simple mode combining the volumes of all disks – it is called JBOD and is used along with RAID. Different models of drive cases may support different RAID levels; this point should be clarified separately.
