The pocket differs from the outer compartment (see the relevant paragraph) primarily in its smaller dimensions — it is designed for relatively small items. External pockets are very handy for small items that you need to have quick access to: toiletries, chargers, medicines, documents, etc. Also note that, unlike the compartment, the pocket may not have a fastener — this design will be useful for inexpensive "quick-access" items, such as water bottles.
