— usually, this term means black and white displays — both those that work with only two colours, and those capable of displaying different shades of grey. At a low cost, monochrome screens are economical and well read even in bright sunlight. On the other hand, the lack of colours reduces the variety of information provided and makes it difficult to use such displays in advanced devices, primarily chartplotters (see "Type").
