S-shaped turntables
— s-shaped include all tonearms that have a curved shape (it does not have to correspond to the letter S). It is believed that the length increased due to the shape reduces the resonant frequency of the lever and, accordingly, the likelihood of interference; however, in fact, this advantage is usually not significant, and curved tonearms weigh more than straight ones. Thus, S-shaped designs are used predominantly in low-cost turntables, and more often due to layout features than for “acoustic” reasons. However, there are also high-end models with such tonearms.
