— DVD is the optical disc standard that replaced the CD. On a regular (single-layer, single-sided) DVD disc, about 4.7 GB of information is standardly placed — almost 7 times more than on a CD. Because of this capacity, DVDs gained popularity as media for movies and games, for which the capacity of CDs was no longer sufficient. Such media are also used for music — in the DVD-Audio format, which also significantly exceeds the previous CD-Audio in quality. The DVD+R label is used for recordable discs created under the DVD+RW Alliance specification. Recordable discs in this case mean disposable media from which it is impossible to erase the recorded data and replace them with others. And the DVD+R specification was developed as an alternative to the original DVD-R standard (see the relevant paragraph). Such disks have a number of differences, in particular, a different material of the reflective layer and additional markings that facilitate the positioning of the drive head and reduce the number of errors. In fact, however, the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R is usually subtle; except that when recording numerous media, the percentage of failures in the "plus" disks may be slightly lower. Also, such media may not play on some older players; however, as technology advances, there are fewer and fewer such devices.
