Initially, Seagate Expansion portable HDDs were sold in an ordinary, inconspicuous glossy box and did not attract much attention. However, when there was a trend towards designer drives on the market, Seagate reconsidered the approach and made new case variations with an unusual fractal coating. It turned out to be much more interesting, and the Expansion series attracted the attention it deserved.

There is a joke that a successful musician does not need to write new hits if the old ones were really good. Seagate is guided by similar principles and releases updates only when there is a real need for it. Therefore, in the period from 2015 to this year, they released only a few external drives.

Expansion Portable and Expansion STKM drives are more designed to be paired with a laptop or ultrabook based on Windows or MacOS. These are quite stylish, minimalist and miniature drives with a rotation speed of 5400 rpm and a USB 3.2 gen1 interface. In both cases, the volume of internal storage can be from 1 to 5 GB.

But Expansion Desktop is a representative of a different breed. This is a massive desktop drive with a full ventilation and cooling system, a separate power supply and a modern USB 3.2 gen1 interface. The minimum storage is 4 TB, the maximum is 16 TB. A bonus to the drive is the Seagate Toolkit software package for data backup and archiving.
