Leatherette
— man-made material that mimics the look of genuine leather. The main advantages of this material are relatively low cost and undemanding maintenance; in addition, for its production it is not necessary to kill animals — this may be fundamental for some dog breeders. The main disadvantages of leatherette, in comparison with leather, are lower strength and durability, as well as a not so “solid” appearance. At the same time, it is worth noting that there are different types of leatherette, which can vary markedly in price and quality. Many inexpensive varieties really look like leather only from afar, and even this look is lost, wearing out, in just a month or two, or even faster; but advanced products are almost indistinguishable from leather ones either in appearance or in strength. So it is quite possible to evaluate the quality of such a collar by its price category. However, the abrasion resistance of even high-quality leatherette is noticeably lower than that of genuine leather.
