How to Choose a Bike LockA bike lock is a simple and effective mechanism for protecting your bike from theft.
Great castle
28 June 2020
I hadn't bought a lock for myself before, thinking that any lock could still be broken into and it's better not to leave the bike unattended at all. But sometimes you just need to pop into a store for literally 5 minutes, and you can't enter every store with a bike, so I decided to get a lock. I'm somewhat involved in the cycling community and have heard that U-locks are generally the most reliable, at least in terms of price-quality ratio. There are, of course, segment locks for $100, but my bike costs $200, so common sense prevails here. The first thing I looked at was the brand, and in Ukraine, the quality brands are OnGuard and ABUS, but the latter is a bit overpriced like Apple, so I chose OnGuard. I could have saved some money and looked at XLC, BBB, or Green Cycle, but I decided to buy once and forget.

The second criterion was the size of the shackle; I picked a larger one with the thought that, if needed, I could attach my wife's bike along with mine. I’ve already checked, and it works. The lock's cylinder is hidden under a rain cover, and the lock closes smoothly without jerking. The set included 4 regular keys and one with a light, but it's huge and not convenient at all. I can add the small one to the main keychain and forget about it. The only downside is, of course, the weight; you always have to pay for reliability and quality. The set included a mount to attach the lock to the frame, but I carry mine in my backpack. I prefer minimalism on my bike so that there's nothing extra at all. It's not really noticeable in the backpack, I weighed the lock myself - 1050 grams. So far, I like everything, I recommend it.
