Canon PowerShot S120
![]() | Outdated Product A digital camera that combines small size and rather impressive performance. The similarity of the equipment allows us to call it a version of the advanced compact G16, designed for maximum compactness: for example, it was possible to reduce the size due to the lack of an optical viewfinder, but the display is made touch-sensitive. Like the G16, the device carries a DIGIC 6 processor, a large 1 / 1.7 "matrix with a resolution of 12.1 MP and sensitivity up to ISO 12 800, as well as a Wi-Fi module. The lens is somewhat less fast, although the maximum value is the same — f / 1.8 .Shooting in RAW and video recording in Full HD at 60 fps are provided. Model overview based on user reviews
The Canon PowerShot S120 is a compact digital camera praised for its high-quality photos thanks to a large sensor and bright lens at wide angles. It offers fully manual settings, shooting in RAW format, and good image stabilization. Users appreciate its pleasant color rendition and white balance, along with its fast continuous shooting capabilities. The camera includes a convenient on-screen customizable quick menu and an ND filter. However, it has a weak battery, which can be mitigated by purchasing a spare. Some users find the manual aperture adjustment in M mode lacking, and the zoom's brightness is low at the long end. Despite these minor drawbacks, the S120 is highly recommended for both advanced users and professionals, offering a balance of portability and functionality, making it ideal for creative photography and hiking. The camera also supports Wi-Fi for easy photo transfer to smartphones, although it does not transfer RAW files or support phone control. Overall, the Canon PowerShot S120 is a versatile and compact choice for those seeking quality and convenience.
Pros
Cons
I bought it at the beginning of 2021 on the secondary market for a very nice price. I chose a compact camera with a big sensor, a fast lens, and Wi-Fi for transferring files directly to the phone and publishing from it. I already own Nikon D90 and D7100 DSLRs for quality reporting in poor lighting conditions. I got this one for creative photos and hiking. Carrying big DSLRs around is inconvenient and expensive in case of accidents. Plus, large DSLRs often don't have wireless transfer capabilities. In short, what I want to say is, this camera is amazing! Small enough to fit in a jeans pocket, very fast, with tons of settings for both beginners and advanced users, good zoom, and detail. I use manual settings, which is less comfortable than using professional DSLRs, but you can get used to it, keeping in mind its size!)) The zoom lacks brightness, but for that, there's the next model, Canon G7X, with less zoom but significantly better brightness (f1.8-2.8). Someone in the comments mentioned that it's inconvenient to transfer photos wirelessly. I didn't notice; everything is very fast. You just need to connect for the first time and enter the network password in the phone; after that, it's smooth sailing. You connect to the Wi-Fi the camera provides, launch a special app, and voilà! You can view and download photos right on your phone. It doesn't transfer RAW files or support phone control, though. I bought a spare battery. The touchscreen is great; you can shoot by touching it, which is very convenient, especially for vertical shots. It supports Swipe. 1) Compact size and appearance 2) High-quality photos with a large sensor 3) Bright lens at wide angle, sufficient zoom 4) Availability of fully manual settings 5) Truly useful and functional Scene modes (especially night modes) 6) Shooting in RAW format 7) Good image stabilization 8) Pleasant color rendition and WB 9) Good video, smooth zoom 10) Very fast continuous shooting (only in JPEG format) 11) Availability of ND Filter 12) Convenient on-screen customizable quick menu 1) Weak battery (but this can be resolved by buying a second one, which isn't expensive) 2) Low light intensity at the long end of the zoom 3) Initially, you might accidentally press the buttons on the dial (you get used to it over time) 4) No memory of the settings menu position, requiring you to scroll through everything each time (but there is a customizable menu where you can add all the necessary items) 5) Poor implementation of manual aperture adjustment in M mode (there is only one option to assign to the front control ring) |
