— initially, onyx is another fine-fiber variety of chalcedony (quartz), similar to agate (see the relevant paragraph). A distinctive feature of classic onyx is a layered structure with a relatively small amount of impurities that form plane-parallel layers. However, in jewelry, the name "onyx" can also be used for plain stones — including those that are called agates by other manufacturers. In general, this is a relatively inexpensive, but quite decent looking stone.
