Smoky quartz

— semi-precious (jewelry and ornamental) stone of the first order (the most expensive in its category). Despite the name (translated from German as “smoky topaz”), it does not belong to topaz and is a variety of quartz, also known as “smoky quartz” or “smoky crystal”. In accordance with the name, it has a brown colour — from barely noticeable to dark and even completely black.

Sometimes the name of this stone is shortened to a simple "topaz", but this is not true, and sometimes not entirely honest: smoky quartz is much more affordable and cheaper.
