General purpose turbocharged engines

Turbocharging

— turbocharging systems increase the pressure of the mixture at the inlet to the cylinders through the use of a turbine, which is spun by the engine exhaust gases. Due to this, it is possible to significantly increase power without increasing the volume and dimensions of the engine; and the fuel consumption per unit of power is lower than in a conventional engine (although the actual consumption, of course, also increases). On the other hand, units with this feature are noticeably more complicated, more expensive and “capricious” than non-turbocharged ones, while small engines are capable of delivering the required power even without turbocharging. Therefore, turbocharging is found mainly in heavy diesel engines — this is where it is most justified.
