Hand cultivators

Hand cultivator

— a multi-toothed tool that loosens the top layer of soil and breaks the crust, improving air and water access to the roots. It is especially handy in narrow rows and densely planted beds, where a hoe might easily hit plants and a rake can't reach. Compared to a simple hoe, a hand cultivator often works "softer" and more precisely: it doesn't cut the layer but rather loosens it and pulls out small weeds by the root. Examples of use: go over after watering to prevent crust formation, quickly loosen soil around carrots and onions, incorporate compost or granular fertilizer into the top layer before planting.
