Usually, the hinges can work in any one plane, with vertical or horizontal free move. But within the one document camera, several hinges can be implemented, including both horizontal and vertical ones. The more hinges, the more precisely you can adjust the optimal position of the optics. Additionally, there are circular hinges that can rotate both vertically and horizontally. The circular hinge is usually installed at the base of the central stand.
