The linear inputs themselves are used to connect external analog signal sources - for example, a CD player, tuner, etc. Initially, working with such equipment is not the main task of phono preamplifiers, which is why this interface is rarely found in them. However, in some cases it may come in handy: for example, if there are digital outputs (see below), the corrector can be used as an analog-to-digital converter for an external audio device.
