Scale, which is insoluble limescale, can cause several negative effects. It reduces the heating element's efficiency and can even lead to its complete failure. Moreover, limescale particles can detach from the boiler's surface and contaminate the steam cleaner's pipes, hoses, and nozzles. This can result in the formation of stubborn contaminants on surfaces, making them difficult to remove. Limescale builds up more quickly when using "hard" water with high calcium salt content. However, even "soft" water can still result in scale formation.

Modern steam cleaners have a protection system against scale, which is usually done by a filter that removes calcium salts from the water used. This prevents scale from settling on critical structural elements and instead settles on a designated part. However, filters have a limited lifespan and need to be replaced periodically, especially if the water used is hard.
