Rest

— an accessory that stabilizes a rifle or pistol on a table or ground, reducing sight shake and dispersion. There are soft bags with filler and hard benchrest models with microlift and precise height adjustment. Quality rests have non-slip pads and damping inserts to avoid damaging the stock. Compared to bipods, a rest provides a more stable and repeatable position on the table, and compared to a simple bag, it offers more convenient fine-tuning of angle and height. In practice, a rest is needed when sighting optics, selecting bullets/ammunition, and shooting groups where a consistent aiming point is important. For outings, foldable universal models are preferred, while for shooting ranges, massive ones are chosen. For PCP airguns, a soft rest is often preferable due to better damping, whereas carbines benefit from a firm fixation.
