Silver

— in the case of jewelry, silver typically refers not to the pure metal, but to an alloy based on this metal. Such alloys have the same white color with a characteristic sheen, while the impurities not only reduce the cost of the material but also eliminate the practical shortcomings of pure silver. In particular, the alloys become harder, more durable, and resistant to scratches. There are both plain silver without coatings and items with gold plating, indistinguishable from gold but noticeably cheaper. However, it is worth noting that this gold plating can wear off over time; this is especially relevant for crosses, which Orthodox Christians are supposed to wear constantly.

Silver items are relatively inexpensive, which can be a virtue for a believer: modesty and humility are considered some of the most important Christian virtues. Purchasing a silver cross or icon, even if you can afford gold, can be an act of restraint. On the other hand, church (Orthodox) canons do not contain any prohibitions or prescriptions regarding the materials from which symbols of Christian faith are made. Even the aforementioned gold-plated silver does not contradict the doctrines of Christianity—if a cross or icon is purchased not for "showing off," not out of pride, but simply because you like the yellow color and do not want to pay extra for a gold alloy.
