Such a system, at a minimum, prevents damage to the battery when it is connected in the wrong polarity: in such a situation, power is simply not supplied to the contacts. And some advanced charger models are even able to automatically swap “plus” and “minus”, adjusting their own polarity to the position of the battery being charged.
