That poor Pierrot! It seems like every single time we watch one of those traveling theater troupes from Commedia Dell'arte put on a play, the clown Pierrot always seems to get the short end of the stick. Sure, he often plays the bumbling fool, but really he's just a guy down on his luck. He's always the butt of the jokes, never gets the girl, and always ends up sad by the end of the play. 
What? What do you mean that's his character? Wait, so all of the characters in those plays are caricatures, and Pierrot is the sad tragic clown all the time? Well. That clears a lot up. If that's the case, then we really must commend the poor Pierrot (and his actor) for always making us pity him. Superb! Excellent! A most stupendous character indeed.
